Well, for the first time in 12 years I was finally able to connect on an elk. 2006 I missed 2 shots at a BIIG old bull, turned out my rifle scope apparently got bumped pretty hard on something and threw off my zero rather badly. I have been pretty bummed by it for years. This year was "just" a spike only general season hunt (yearling bull elk only...with some caveats), but even on a pitifully low success rate hunt, I managed to find me one!

About an hour before I got my "spike", I had a large 5 or 6 point (per side for you Easterners) stand up about 20 yards away from me, gave me a disgusted look, and wandered away. Was pretty damn funny if a bit heart-stopping. The spike decided it'd be a good idea to sneak up behind me to check me out. An unfortunate mistake on his part, I'm afraid.

Now, I call him a "spike" as he is, legally speaking...but just barely. He's got a fork on one side and a spike on the other, anything bigger would be illegal. Also, this is a 2 year old bull not a yearling. Just one of the couple of loopholes in the law to prevent mistakes, but allowed me to take an animal! He really should be what we call a "raghorn" bull, either a 3 or 4 point. For some reason he's not.

I got this bull on Wednesday 11/6, on opening day Saturday 11/2 my 14 year old nephew who had an "any elk" tag for the adjacent hunt unit took his first elk (a cow-female elk). Was his first ever hunt with his own tag and rifle and hunted a whopping 9 hours to get his first. Poor kid is in for a big let-down when it takes him many years to do it again. Will post pics when I get them.

The closest I got to hunting was shooting a rifle that was meant for bunnies. Sooo, you gonna eat that Acuta? :P

I've played laser tag a few times. Not trying to brag but... I was pretty good.

Also I think I fired a bb gun once when I was a kid maybe. So there's that.

Heck YES that's food! Makes beef look like crap! 219lbs hanging, should be upwards of 100lbs of cut and wrapped delicious meat. Wild game = the original free range.

LOL, shot him with a .450 Marlin lever action Marlin 1895M. 350 grain bullet. Its, ummm....got a bit of a kick on both ends.

Only thing I've hunted are blackbirds (shotgun to get them out of the corn) and people (Paintball, both recreationally and competitively  )

I have, however, had plenty of venison from my cousin's hunts.

Ok, got more pics!

My nephew with my brother in law and my nephew's cow:

Looks disturbingly like the rifle is pointed at them...it's not, thank the camera angle.

And this is how I found my bull, brother in law got to him first (short run after the shot = normal. Adrenaline can carry them even when they're dead). He had just enough time to drag out some surveyor's tape and wrap a bow around his neck...

Gotta love a smartass! lol

This pic is a bit grisly, so not going to post is as a pic, just a link- view at your own risk. My son (Rarles) acting like a jackass while I was gutting the elk (Mr. I just gagged but now gonna act like I didn't):

Acuta's look a lot more like a hunting trip than Sniper's so far, lol.
