So after we brought the topic of music up last night, I'll go ahead and post a couple bands I really dig right now :

White Skull - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl9brvHiyJU - "Asgard" from Tales of the North (Good Power Metal, not crappy Power Metal like DragonForce.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJUje2PNxiE - "High Treason" from Public Glory, Secret Agony

Muse - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtZV5XdfqrI - These guys make really cool sounding tracks, mix of Electronic and Rock.

Power metal is a gateway drug to harder metal.

Start with:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=836sWXJh6OA

Then dose on this:

I like some of them, but I don't like growling very much.

Anders from In Flames actually can sing while growling, the dude from Amon Amarth not so much..

That's just my opinion from one clip though. The keys solo in the Sonata Arctica song was epic!

I'll definitely check some of these bands out, thanks Greg.

Growling was an acquired taste for me, I once thought as you did. I can point to one album - Clayman by In Flames - that broke me into the vocal style for good. I loved the music, and so I exposed myself to the style until I bore it, then liked it.

Anders Friden alternates growls with clean vocals, which is what I think what you meant when you refer to growling while singing. A lot of bands do this, including Protest the Hero and Opeth, both of which I linked, and both of which have clean vocals that are far better than Friden's (honestly).

I always thought Peter Dolving had a cool vocal style:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxlR3gmHrY8 (lol @ beeps!)

I'm a classically-trained tenor and can certainly appreciate a clean voice, but I've gotten to a point where I can barely stomach anything in the power metal genre. Thematically banal and musically uninteresting, and not enough grit to make the sap sweet - is how I can sum up most of the music that first exposed me to the metal (look up Hammerfall). Music is all about the person who interprets it, however, so while it may be milkwater to me it may be sweet wine to you, and I say drink up. All I would beg of you is to not close your musical doors to growled vocals!

Yeah that's what I meant by the really muddled comment I posted - Clean vocals, some growling, back to clean. I like the style some, but an entire song with the vocalist coughing his / her lungs up just doesn't do it for me.

I listened to In Flames around 2004, and I really liked them - and yeah, Clayman is a great album. I found some other gems too.

While I'm posting I like Progressive metal too, such as Dream Theater. Their CD Scenes from a Memory is a REALLY great listen, it tells a story pretty much as you go from track to track.

Going back to the topic of shunning growling vocals - the door's not necessarily closed, it's just regulated by security right now. :p
